Why this unusual Philippine resin can smell simultaneously of citrus peel, pepper, pine and warm wood

Resins tend to arrive with expectations. Frankincense suggests smoke and cool mineral air. Myrrh is darker and more bitter. Labdanum brings warmth, leather and amber.

Elemi is harder to place.

At first, it can smell almost like citrus peel: bright, green and sharply aromatic. There is something peppery underneath, followed by pine, wood and a softer balsamic warmth. It has the depth we associate with a resin without necessarily smelling dark or heavy.

This contradiction is what makes elemi interesting in perfume. It can sit naturally beside bergamot and other citrus materials, but it also belongs comfortably among woods, incense and balsams. In a natural perfume, that range gives the perfumer considerable freedom. Elemi can be clearly recognizable, or it can simply alter the space between brighter and darker materials.

For an ingredient with such a distinctive smell, it remains relatively unfamiliar outside perfumery.

What Is Elemi?

The elemi most commonly encountered in contemporary perfumery is Manila elemi, an oleoresin obtained from Canarium luzonicum, a tree in the Burseraceae family native to the Philippines. Kew's Plants of the World Online recognizes Canarium luzonicum as an accepted species whose native range is the Philippines.

The word elemi has not always referred to one botanical material. Historically it was applied to aromatic resins obtained from several plants in different parts of the world. In modern international trade, however, Manila elemi became the most important material associated with the name, with Canarium luzonicum regarded as its principal source.

The resin exudes from the trunk and is soft when fresh, with a pale yellow or greenish appearance that hardens as some of its volatile material is lost to the air. It is this oleoresin that gives perfumery both the crude resinous material and the essential oil distilled from it.

That distinction matters because elemi resin and elemi essential oil are related without smelling exactly the same.

What Does Elemi Smell Like?

The most recognizable part of elemi is its brightness.

Smell the essential oil and citrus often appears first, though it is less juicy than the smell of an orange or lemon. It is closer to peel: green, bitter, aromatic and slightly terpenic. Pepper and fresh pine follow, with a resinous warmth underneath that becomes clearer as the initial brightness settles.

The chemistry helps explain the impression.

A frequently cited 1993 analysis of Manila elemi oil identified 39 compounds representing 99.2% of the sample. Limonene accounted for 56% of the oil, accompanied by substantial α-phellandrene and smaller amounts of elemol, sabinene and other constituents.

Limonene is strongly associated with citrus odors, so its prominence makes the almost lemon-peel character of elemi considerably less mysterious.

Yet elemi does not smell simply like a citrus oil. The surrounding terpenes and sesquiterpene materials introduce pepper, woods, resin and an aromatic quality that makes the material stranger than its high limonene content might suggest.

A more recent analysis of a commercial elemi oil likewise found limonene, α-phellandrene and elemol among its principal constituents, although their proportions differed from the earlier sample. Another 2023 study examining two commercial Canarium luzonicum oils found markedly different chemical profiles between them.

There is no perfectly fixed formula for the smell of elemi.

That variability is part of working with natural materials.

Why Elemi Smells So Different From Other Resins

Elemi belongs to the same botanical family as frankincense and myrrh, which helps explain why they share a certain resinous vocabulary. But they occupy very different olfactory territory.

Frankincense can feel mineral, smoky, lemony and austere. Myrrh often moves toward bitterness, earth and balsamic darkness. Elemi retains the resinous family resemblance while appearing much fresher.

It has a peculiar transparency.

This is why elemi can be useful when a perfumer wants resin without immediately suggesting a church, an incense burner or a dense amber perfume. Its citrus and pepper facets can keep an incense composition feeling open, while the resin underneath prevents the brightness from becoming simply cologne-like.

The effect depends, of course, on everything surrounding it. Against frankincense, elemi may emphasize light and freshness. Beside bergamot, its resinous side becomes more apparent. With woods, spices or patchouli, the citrus impression can recede almost completely.

The material changes according to its neighbors.

Elemi Resin and Elemi Essential Oil

The word elemi on a fragrance description may obscure another important distinction.

The crude oleoresin contains both volatile and nonvolatile material. When it is distilled, the perfumer receives an essential oil concentrated in the more volatile aromatic constituents. Historical compositional work on Manila elemi describes the crude material as containing a substantial resinous fraction alongside volatile terpenes, while the distilled oil is dominated much more clearly by those volatile aromatic compounds.

This helps explain why elemi essential oil can smell surprisingly fresh for something derived from a resin.

Distillation favors precisely the materials capable of traveling with steam and becoming volatile oil.

Resinoid preparations retain a different portion of the original oleoresin and can therefore present a deeper, less fleeting side of the material. For a perfumer, these are not simply stronger and weaker versions of elemi. They are different ways of selecting from the same botanical source.

This principle appears throughout natural perfumery. Extraction does not merely retrieve a smell intact from a plant. It helps determine which version of the plant the perfumer receives.

Elemi in a Natural Perfume

Elemi becomes particularly interesting in natural perfume because it is difficult to assign to one conventional part of a note pyramid.

Its volatile terpenes can make themselves apparent very early, while its resinous character connects naturally to materials we usually think of as belonging deeper in a composition.

A perfumer might pair elemi with bergamot, green mandarin or other citrus oils, allowing the aromatic resin to extend the impression of brightness as the most fleeting citrus materials begin to recede.

Beside frankincense, elemi can introduce something greener and more peppery.

With sandalwood, cedar, patchouli or vetiver, the woodier part of the material becomes easier to notice.

It can also work beautifully around flowers. Rose gains a dry aromatic edge; lavender becomes less conventionally herbal; jasmine can acquire an unexpected brightness without simply becoming more citrusy.

This is probably where the idea of elemi as a “bridging” material comes from. It can participate convincingly in several different parts of a composition.

But there is no chemical law stating that elemi joins top notes to base notes, nor does it automatically make a perfume last longer.

Those are compositional possibilities, not intrinsic functions.

The more useful observation is that elemi contains contrasting facets that make those possibilities unusually easy to imagine.

Is Elemi a Fixative?

Elemi is sometimes described as a fixative, as many traditional resinous perfume materials have been.

The term can be misleading.

A perfume's longevity depends on the physical properties and concentrations of many materials in the formula, their interactions, the carrier, application and the surface on which the perfume is worn. Adding a resin does not simply hold volatile ingredients in place like varnish over paint.

Elemi essential oil itself contains a large proportion of comparatively volatile monoterpenes, which is part of the reason it smells so immediately bright.

The nonvolatile and less volatile portions of the original resin behave differently, and a resinoid may contribute greater persistence than the distilled oil. But it is more accurate to think of elemi as part of the overall construction of a perfume than as an ingredient whose job is to “fix” everything around it.

That distinction matters because natural perfume is often described through old simplifications about fixatives and evaporation that make formulation sound much more mechanical than it really is.

The Particular Beauty of a Bright Resin

Elemi is most compelling when its contradictory qualities remain visible.

There is enough citrus to feel luminous, but not enough to make it simply fresh.

There is enough resin to create depth, but not necessarily the sweetness or darkness associated with amber.

There is spice without the warmth of cinnamon or clove, wood without the dryness of cedar, and something almost incense-like without the solemnity of frankincense.

This makes elemi especially good at changing the character of familiar materials.

Imagine bergamot against frankincense. The contrast is relatively clear: brightness against smoke and resin.

Put elemi between them and the border begins to soften. Its citrus side recognizes the bergamot while its resinous side recognizes the frankincense.

The resulting perfume may feel more continuous, but that continuity comes from the perfumer's use of overlapping characteristics rather than from elemi performing a predetermined structural function.

This is a more interesting way to understand materials generally.

Ingredients rarely have jobs.

They have possibilities.

Elemi and Niche Fragrance

Elemi is well suited to niche fragrance because it does not arrive with an enormous cultural image attached to it.

Rose already means something before the bottle is opened.

Vanilla does too.

Patchouli might have even more baggage.

Elemi is relatively quiet by comparison. Many wearers have smelled it without learning to recognize its name.

That gives a perfumer room to use the material without needing to satisfy an established picture of what “elemi perfume” should smell like.

It can appear in an incense fragrance without becoming overtly ecclesiastical. It can sharpen woods, complicate citrus or give an aromatic composition something stranger than freshness.

This does not mean elemi is inherently niche. It appears across perfumery.

What niche fragrance can offer is space for the peculiarities of the material to become part of the point.

Where Elemi Comes From Matters

The Philippine origin of Manila elemi deserves more attention than it usually receives in perfume descriptions.

Canarium luzonicum is native to the Philippines and is currently categorized as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List, according to Kew's current taxonomic record.

That makes the easy sustainability story around elemi more complicated.

Resin is a non-timber forest product, and tapping can obtain material without felling the tree. A CITES technical document discussing Canarium luzonicum specifically noted that resin extraction was considered sustainable because the process does not kill the tree.

Yet non-destructive does not automatically mean environmentally insignificant.

Philippine forestry research surveying Canarium populations in several provinces found relatively low tree densities in the areas examined and concluded that the available stands offered limited potential for commercial resin tapping at that time.

These findings are older and geographically limited, so they should not be used to characterize every current elemi supply chain. They do, however, make one principle clear: the sustainability of a natural perfume material cannot be inferred from the fact that it comes from a tree.

Population health matters.

Harvest pressure matters.

Forest management matters.

Traceability matters.

For elemi, knowing the botanical and geographic source is more meaningful than simply calling the ingredient sustainable.

Natural Materials Are Not Automatically Ethical Materials

There is a tendency in natural perfume to let botanical origin carry an ethical halo.

The plant came from nature, so the material must somehow be better for nature.

Actual supply chains are rarely that simple.

A natural ingredient may support communities and create economic value for standing trees. It may also come from a species under ecological pressure. Harvest practices can be careful or careless. Processing may happen close to the source or thousands of miles away.

Elemi makes a particularly good example because resin extraction offers a potentially renewable relationship with a living tree, while the principal species itself still merits conservation attention.

That tension is more useful than a perfect sustainability story.

It reminds us that respecting natural materials requires knowing something about the nature they came from.

Why Elemi Matters

Elemi does not need to be called a hidden gem, a secret fixative or the future of natural perfumery to be interesting.

The material itself is enough.

A Philippine tree produces an aromatic oleoresin. Distillation reveals an essential oil unusually rich in limonene and other terpenes. The resulting scent occupies a curious territory between citrus, pepper, pine, wood and balsam.

That combination gives perfumers options.

Elemi can bring freshness into incense, aromatic dryness into florals, or resinous depth beneath citrus without immediately turning the composition dark.

Sometimes you will recognize it.

Often you will not.

That may be part of its charm. Natural perfume contains many materials whose greatest contribution is not to announce themselves, but to change how everything around them is perceived.

Elemi happens to do so with an unusual amount of light.
