Then Edward departs on urgent business connected to the family’s tea interests in the East, leaving Penelope to find her own footing in a world that has not yet decided whether to welcome her.

As letters are delayed, rumors gather, and a death within the Harcourt family alters the line of succession, Penelope must learn whom she can trust and what she is willing to risk.

Each mailing carries you deeper into her story through private correspondence, society news, period ephemera, and the small physical traces of a life unfolding far beyond the page.

Once upon a time, waiting for the mail was a perfectly reasonable thing to look forward to. There was the anticipation of a letter, the pleasure of opening it, and the delicious possibility that whatever was inside might change the course of your afternoon.

We've lost a little of that romance in a world where everything arrives instantly and is forgotten almost just as quickly. So we're bringing it back, one envelope at a time.

Twice a month, another piece of the story finds its way to your door. A familiar handwriting, a new development, perhaps a secret you've been dying to hear. And just when you've finished reading, there's something lovely about knowing the next letter is already on its way.

Real paper, beautiful details, and letters you can hold in your hands. These aren't stories destined to disappear into an inbox or get lost among a hundred open tabs. They're little pieces of another world, collected over the course of a year, ready to be tucked away, reread, and rediscovered someday.

The Story Synopsis

A regency romance delivered one secret at a time.

As Fate Unfurls

London, 1819. Penelope Harcourt has crossed the Atlantic with a fortune rooted in tea and a new husband whose family name opens doors her money alone never could. Edward is the second son of an English earl, thoughtful, affectionate, and far less interested in society’s rules than the family into which Penelope has married. Their union begins with genuine tenderness, even if London suspects that commerce played as great a role as romance.

While Edward is called away on a commercial venture connected to Britain’s expanding trade in Singapore, Penelope remains behind to establish their household and navigate her first London season. She finds an early ally in her sister-in-law, Louisa, whose warmth offers Penelope a place within the Harcourt family. She is also drawn into the commanding orbit of Georgiana, Countess of Harcourt, whose approval can shape a reputation before a single word reaches the newspapers.

Edward’s letters arrive from ports and trading houses thousands of miles away. Then they become irregular. News travels slowly, speculation travels quickly, and Penelope’s loyalty begins to look increasingly inconvenient to those who would prefer her future settled.

A sudden death within the Harcourt family transforms private grief into a question of inheritance. Old friendships become uneasy. Society begins to consider Penelope’s marriage, fortune, and possible widowhood as matters of public interest. Around her gather loyal friends, polished rivals, watchful relatives, and gentlemen whose attentions become more difficult to dismiss as Edward’s absence lengthens.

Moving between crowded London drawing rooms and the quieter beauty of the Harcourt countryside, "As Fate Unfurls" is an immersive historical romance about marriage, reputation, female friendship, and the private ambitions concealed beneath impeccable manners.

an immersive experience

Read between the lines.

There's an art to writing a good letter, particularly when you have something to hide. In "As Fate Unfurls," everyone has their own version of events, and not everyone is particularly interested in telling the whole truth. A society announcement might contradict a private confidence, a letter from abroad may arrive with more questions than answers, and a seemingly innocent invitation could change everything.

As the story unfolds, you'll find yourself privy to conversations Penelope hasn't heard, secrets she's yet to discover, and the occasional scandal that polite society would rather keep to itself. Each envelope brings another perspective, another little piece of evidence, and perhaps a reason to reconsider everything you've read so far.

And then, of course, there's the waiting. Two weeks can be an awfully long time when you're expecting news from someone you care about. Especially when you've begun to suspect they aren't telling you everything.

What kind of story is this?

As Fate Unfurls is a serialized epistolary Regency romance told through monthly physical mailings. The narrative combines love, family intrigue, social rivalry, inheritance, and adventure abroad, allowing the mystery of Edward’s absence to develop alongside Penelope’s emergence as a formidable figure in her own right.

What age is the story written for?

"As Fate Unfurls" is written for adult readers and contains romantic tension, family loss, social intrigue, and historically grounded themes. It does not rely on explicit sexual content, but it is intended as sophisticated historical fiction rather than a children’s story.

Who is Penelope Harcourt?

Penelope is the daughter of an American tea merchant and the heiress to a considerable family fortune. Intelligent, observant, and accustomed to commercial conversations from which most women are excluded, she arrives in England with knowledge that society continually underestimates. Her marriage grants her entry into the aristocracy, but it does not guarantee that she will ever be accepted by it.

Why does Edward leave England?

Edward departs to address urgent matters involving the family’s tea and shipping interests, including a venture connected to the newly developing British settlement in Singapore. His journey carries him through distant ports, unreliable communications, and commercial rivalries that Penelope can glimpse only through his increasingly sporadic dispatches.

Who can Penelope trust?

Louisa Harcourt first welcomes Penelope as a sister and friend, while Theodora “Thea” Bell offers companionship beyond the family’s carefully managed circle. Lady Honoria Wrotham, a former Woman of the Bedchamber to Queen Charlotte, understands how influence truly moves through London. Georgiana, Countess of Harcourt, may become Penelope’s greatest protector or the most elegant obstacle in her path.

What threatens Penelope’s place in society?

Edward’s prolonged absence leaves Penelope suspended between identities. She is a wife without a husband beside her, an heiress whose fortune remains entangled with family business, and a possible future countess whose position depends upon news that may take months to arrive. Every rumor creates an opportunity for someone, and Penelope soon discovers that concern can disguise curiosity, ambition, or courtship.

Is this a true story?

The characters and central events of "As Fate Unfurls" are fictional, but their world is grounded in the realities of Regency life. The story draws upon the period’s social customs, inheritance laws, tea trade, newspapers, shipping routes, and private correspondence to create an experience that feels as though it might have been preserved from a real family archive.

Historical figures and events may pass through the edges of the narrative, while its letters, society notices, invitations, and commercial papers are created in the spirit of authentic period documents. It is not the reproduction of a true story, but a work of historical fiction carefully built from the truths of its time.

THE EXPERIENCE

The little details

Before your first letter arrives.

A few things you might be wondering before your first letter arrives. From what's tucked inside each envelope and when to expect the next, to gifting a story, shipping, and keeping your collection together, here are the practical particulars of a rather lovely experience.

What will I receive?

Each envelope contains multiple letters and pieces of period-inspired ephemera, which may include society pages, invitations, notices, private papers, and other objects from within the story’s world.

The mailings arrive in narrative order, with each new installment revealing another part of the story.

How often will the letters arrive?

Two mailings are sent each month over approximately twelve months. The measured pace is part of the experience, allowing anticipation to grow between arrivals and giving you time to examine each installment before the next enters the story.

Is this a subscription that renews?

No. Your purchase includes the complete 24-mailing story experience. It does not automatically renew when the final installment has been sent.

When another story calls to you, it can be purchased separately.

Can I give "As Fate Unfurls" as a gift?

Not at this time. In the future, our international readers will be able to purchase the entire story as a delivered experience. If you're interested, please sign up to our newsletter to be kept updated for when this is available.
